Guess what?!?

Maya doesn't dig the rice cereal... but she loves her some barley cereal!

Maya's Pooptastic Mood.

"Hi Eebee!"

"Personal space, Eebee. Personal Space. Back off."

"Mommy, I love you."

We are cranky today. Whiny, irritable, sleepy, and just plain old crabby. Don't know why, but I think she didn't sleep late enough this morning. Right around 9:30 this morning, she started to let me know that she wasn't all that happy. This quickly progressed to misery. Oh well. She's asleep now, so hopefully she'll be a happy camper when she wakes up.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, these photos are from yesterday, when Maya was in an awesome-tastic mood. I couldn't bear to take photos of crabby McFinkel this morning.

The situation is becoming critical.

Maya might really need a haircut. The locks are out of control.

Four Months!!!

It seems like Maya was just born, but 4 months is suddenly upon us! She's almost big enough for her new umbrella stroller!!! You think she likes it?

Geez, Mom!

"I thought we discussed this already! Stop taking pictures of me with "Sleepy Guy!'"

More Food, Please!

Mmmmmm...

"Feed me, please. I'm ready."

"Finally. Thanks, Mom."

Rice cereal must taste like chocolate...

She loved it! Watch as Maya tries to eat both hands, the cereal, and her bib, all at the same time!

Um...

Who thinks Maya looks like the mailman?

Maya's Stats

We went to Maya's 4 month appointment with Dr. Putt Putt (a.k.a. Dr. Putnam) this morning. He said Maya is the cutest baby he's ever seen. Well, maybe I made that up, but still... Anyway, Maya is porkin' out at a whopping 11 pounds, 13.25 ounces. This puts her in the 14th percentile for weight. So, I guess "porkin' out" is sort of an exaggeration. She's also 22 inches long, or as I like to say - 2 inches away from 2 feet tall. Maybe she'll be a model! Anyway, Putt Putt said we can start her on rice cereal tonight. We can't wait. The poor thing got 4 shots today though, so hopefully she'll be feeling well enough to chow down....

"Mommy, you make me laugh with all your silly noises!"

"Leave me alone. I'm updating the blog."

"Look at the corduroys Mommy made me yesterday!"

Red Alert!

Take our new poll, please!

She wants to eat!

Lately, Maya seems to want food. Like, real people food. She was eyeing my popcorn today, and even asked for a sip of my Coke Zero...

Did I give Maya some Coke? You decide...

"Please give me some rice cereal, Mommy!"

Maya, you're so stretchy!

Check out the face Maya makes as she stretches. I couldn't get her to do the legs at the same time, but still, this is pretty cute.

Why so tired?

"Hey Mom? Why do I always have to hang out with this sleepy guy?"

We rocked West County Mall.

We love playtime at the mall. Brooke and Nash were there too, in case you're wondering who took the photo.

"Keira and I had the same due date, but she decided to get outta dodge 6 days early. Too bad - we could've been twins... sort of."

Hailey's Last Hurrah!

"I'm sleepy today."

"I may be sleepy today, but this bean bag isn't my crib. You can't fool me."

Jen and Hailey (and Ben, of course) are moving to Denver on Tuesday. Yesterday, we had a final "playdate" with Hailey and friends. We went to Brook's house for morning goodies, and playtime. We had a nice time together, although Maya and I left early because we had someone from "Parents as Teachers" coming to play with Maya. Anyway, it was fun times, and we'll miss Jen and Hailey. Especially the part where we swap stories at the mall over coffee. Sad...

"Mom! Let me go!"

"Where's my mommy?"

"Bye guys! We'll miss you!"

Charlie loves a good photo opp.

"I'm 6 days older and 6 days wiser than you Maya!"

"I'm playing alone, and I love it!"

Standing Maya

She really wanted to stand before her shower last night. We have a front view too, but Kevin has deemed it "inappropriate." Remind me never to give Maya the password to edit the blog. She might want to erase this during the teenage years...

Good Morning, Maya!

Maya always wakes up happy.

Maya the Model

So, brilliant Brooke made a dress for her baby girl. It is so adorable, with little apples on it. Since her baby hasn't made an appearance yet, Maya modeled the dress. It was so cute. I want to make one, but so far, I'm only in the practicing stage. No dresses for me until I can cut in a straight line, right? Anyway, Nash and Maya hung out in the dog bed again today. He's such a good sharer. Maya and I also went to visit a local gym, to see if it was a contender for me. Unfortunately, I was totally put off by the babysitting situation. 15 kids at a time, with 2 babysitters! Yikes. No thanks. Maya is napping in her car seat now. She seems very sleepy today. I'm on my tip-toes so she doesn't wake up.

"It's nice sharing this bed with you Nash!"

"Brooke, your baby is so lucky to have such a pretty dress. These apples look so good, I might just eat them..."

One More...

Is Mommy obsessed with videotaping Maya in the Jumperoo? Hmmmm... Perhaps... But c'mon, who wouldn't want this on tape?

Busy Baby.

We had a very busy morning today. We started out at school, where I took the very last of my belongings - a multicolored set of plastic drawers. I intended to leave them for the new teacher, but I've suddenly become crafty, and I need them for my workroom (a.k.a the guestroom/Kevin's study/my craft room). I'm using them to store my sewing materials. After our trip to school, we headed over to meet Brooke at Hancock Fabrics, where we bought what we needed to follow a pattern for making a sewing machine cover. This will be my first real project, and I can't wait to get some practice so I can make some baby clothes and other goodies. We had a low key afternoon. I kind of like this whole, "busy morning, slow afternoon" business. Works out well for us!

"I look just like Daddy. Well, at least in this picture..."

"You crack me up Mommy! Now go sew me a dress!"

"Sorry I was so bossy, Mommy. I love you."

Daddy's Home!

Kevin is post-call today. For those of you who don't know what the means, it means that he just worked a 24 hour shift, and now has the day off. Hooray for Daddy time! Sometimes he comes home outrageously exhausted, but today he came home raring to go. We went for a 3 mile walk at the mall and then met Nash and Brooke for some playtime. Now we're home, and of course he is ready to take a long nap, but at least we had him for a few hours! I think Maya loves it when Kevin is home. It's just more people to hold her and love her. It's been very hot here, so Maya has been sleeping a little more than usual. I think her hair makes her super hot and sweaty. On a day like today, her hair becomes totally unruly and somewhat matted down to her head. Silly girl.

"I can't believe I was ever that small. And swollen. I can't believe I was ever that swollen..."

Christina Takes her First Shower.

Wait, that's not right. What I meant to say, was that today was Christina's baby shower. Christina is one of my friends from school. She is 31 weeks pregnant with a little boy - Charlie. She looks so adorable and happy, which makes me really miss being pregnant. I loved my wiggly baby bump. It's so hot here though, so surely being pregnant in this heat is no bargain. Anyway, Maya and I had a great time schmoozing with the quite large population of peeps at the shower. Christina is one popular girl! Maya even had a chance to wear her favorite party dress. What could be better? So that was our outing for today. Maya is now exhausted and cranky, so we're off to hit the crib.

"What are you looking at?"

"Christina is cooking up a boyfriend for me."

"Sara and I have known each other since I was in the womb."

"Mommy, Christina's baby is going to be stylin' with all his fun new outfits!"

So, I'm a day behind on the blog. Oh well. Yesterday we paid a visit to Grant's Farm. Oddly enough, this was Maya's third time there in her short life. I guess we just can't get enough of those farm animals. Anyway, the visit yesterday was short, because Kevin had to go into work, and it was 95 degrees outside. Brooke and Nash met us for a short time, but like I said, we were super efficient! Grampy got a beer or 2 at the end, while us ladies decided to hold off, considering it was only 10:15 in the morning! Maya took a great nap in the afternoon, followed by a trip to the mall and a visit to her favorite dive - Sweet Tomatoes. It was Grammy and Grampy's last night, so we had an obligation to spend it there! Adios Grammy and Grampy. See you at Thanksgiving (but maybe you'll sneak in a visit before then, eh?)
"I love holding Daddy's hand."

"Mommy, can I eat too?"

"We just ran through the sprinkler, so my face is very confused..."

"Seeing all those animals was so exciting!"

Hazy, Hot, and Humid...

So we went in the pool!!! That's right, yesterday Brooke invited us over for some fun in the sun. She blew up the pool and broke out the Elmo sprinkler, so we could go for a dip. Maya donned her new pink bathing suit and cover up, courtesy of Grammy and Grampy. She was looking mighty adorable, but I still wasn't sure she'd enjoy being dipped in cold water. Brooke was smart though - she filled up the pool long before the babies actually went inside. Nice. Anyway, surprisingly enough, Maya loved it. I mean, she just ate it up. She even liked the Elmo sprinkler, although every time she went under, she went a little crazy from having the water in her eyes. Sadly, it was so bright and sunny, she could barely look up at me for photos. That's okay though. We had a fantastic time just getting her all wet. I can't wait for our trip to Orlando in October. Maya is going to be a little star in her bathing suit - at that point it might even fit her!!!

Maya and Mommy hang out before Maya goes in the pool. Nice cover up Maya!

"Where's my margarita?"

"Like my new suit?"

"Grammy loves me."

"This is MY pool Yaya - but you can come in 'cause I love you."

Will Maya be the next Top Chef??

Okay, I admit it - I love reality television (hiding my head in shame). One of my favorite shows is Top Chef, which is on Bravo. Unfortunately, I no longer have Bravo, but I managed to watch every episode imaginable of Top Chef, before losing my free preview. Anyway, I fell in love with the show, and was beside myself with excitement, when Brooke sent me a text message, showing me that the Top Chef Tour was coming to the brand new Whole Foods in St. Louis. So yesterday, we packed ourselves up (cameras and all), and made our way over to the new Whole Foods, in the 90 degree heat. Unfortunately, when we got there, we were greeted by 2 unexpected factors:

1. You needed tickets (free tickets - weird, eh?) to see the contestants do a food prep demo, on a large bus. Otherwise, you could watch it on a small plasma TV in the parking lot (remember - it was 90 degrees and muggy magoo).

2. There were only 2 contestants there - Dale and Josie. I barely remember Josie, and Dale was a great chef, but kind of the "jerk of the season." I didn't care much about either of them.

Needless to say, I was bummed. I took some photos of Dale, who managed to make some ridiculously goofy faces at Maya, and after we didn't get chosen off the waiting list to see the food prep show, we just went into Whole Foods and shopped. Sigh. It was pretty lame, but sort of fun nonetheless. Maya seemed to liked it. Especially when we rubbed ice cubes on her legs. She's a cutie, don't you think?

You like this hat we found at Whole Foods? I don't know if we should be covering up Maya's 'do...

Dale (Season 4 of Top Chef) makes faces at Maya.

The Top Chef bus had no room for us. Not even Maya's sweet face could have gotten us off that waiting list...

"I'm hatching my plan to become the next Top Chef!"

Maya is thoroughly enjoying her visit with Grammy and Grampy. Apparently she enjoys a lot of attention. Hmph. Case in point - Maya hates being in the car. No, let me rephrase that. She doesn't like being alone in the back seat, with nothing to look at - especially once that beloved pacifier slips out of her mouth. With Grammy and Grampy around, someone is always in the backseat with her. This is particularly helpful when it comes to putting the pacifier back in. The thing is, Maya likes looking in the mirror in the backseat. I wonder if she thinks there is another baby back there with her. Hmmmm. The thing is, she must realize that this "other baby" is no help when it comes to replacing the aforementioned "lost pacifier." Anyway, it's been nice having a backseat companion for Maya. It saves me the trouble of having to reach back and vibrate the carseat every time she melts down! In addition, I'm pretty sure Grammy and Grampy love Maya so much, they can barely stand to let her go to sleep. We like having them here. I'll post more about our adventures this week, as I take more photos...
"Do we look alike?"

"I can't decide if I'm happy or sad... so I'll just make this weird face..."

"Do I look French in this hat?"

Maya and Hailey's Playdate

Why do Jen, Ben, and Hailey have to move to Colorado? Boo. With only 2 weeks left before their departure, Jen invited us over for a little playdate, since we were already in the area. Jen has been busy lately, packing up the house, while also creating these amazing wedding invites for her friend. Anyway,we visited for a bit, snd Maya and Hailey decided to have a gabfest on the floor...

Maya - "Oh my gosh Hailey! That's hilarious!"

Hailey - "I know. Totally."

Maya - "Oh, but seriously, did you hear about Angelina and Brad's babies??"

Hailey - "Of course! I totally plan to marry Knox Leon."

Maya - "No Hailey. I'm marrying him."

Hailey - "Whatever,
Maya."

Maya - "I still love you, Hailey! Even if we do fight over boys."

Hailey - "Love you too, Maya!"

The Revolving Door...

Well, now that Nana is gone, Grammy and Grampy have decided to take her place for the week. We've been busy so far! Unfortunately, Kevin is away at an interview, so he snagged the laptop for a couple of days. This makes it difficult for me to update the blog, since I'm so used to using the laptop for updates. Therefore, until Wednesday, I might be slightly MIA. We'll do our best though. Today we went to the outlets to walk and check out the goods. It was fun times. Maya slept and ate and laughed. Hmmm... I'll update soon with new photos.
"Not to toot my own horn, but toot toot - I'm awesome at the Jumperoo."

Maya goes bar hopping.

We took Maya to the annual "Anesthesiology Inservice Exam Happy Hour" the other night. Kevin had taken a practice exam during the day, and the evening celebration was a dinner at a bar downtown. We decided to bring Maya, and she was a hit! Well, actually, she fell asleep in the sling and stayed that way for most of the night. It was fun though. On the way home, there was a double rainbow, right by the arch (see photo). It was really amazing.
This is why it pays to bring a camera everywhere!

"Hi. I'm just sitting here."

"Daddy, you kiss me a lot..."

Sunday, July 13, 2008

Maya is starting to actually jump in the Jumperoo. At first she would just sit there and be mesmerized by all the "stuff" on it, but now she actually jumps! We had to put books under it, since she's way too short to touch the ground. It's pretty adorable to watch her play. She was cracking me up yesterday... Enjoy!

Maya the Bita'

Lately, Maya wants to put everything in her mouth. It's tough to take a photo of her without her hands in her mouth. It's intense, like she is just enthralled with eating her hands. It cracks me up. Just yesterday, at Brooke's house, Maya was sitting in Nash's bouncy seat. It has this plastic bird attached, that you can spin, but it's at hand level, and can't move closer to your face. Maya spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to stick it in her mouth (unsuccessfully, since it would have been impossible). Some say it could be a "teething thing," but I'm guessing that she's just looking for her thumb. It's pretty cute though. Well, besides the fact that her hands are always soaked. Oh well. We'll forgive her since she's such a cutie, right?

"I dig my hand, Mom."

"Does this tongue thing come out?"

Ruff Ruff

Brooke and Ray bought Nash a doggie bed, which he apparently loves. At first I thought maybe that was odd - after all, Nash is a child, not a dog (obviously). But then I realized it's the softest little sitting area! We went there today, and Maya had a chance to share the doggie bed with Nash and Eebee. These are the highlights:
"Where am I?"

Nash says, "Don't mess with Yaya and Eebee. I'm their bodyguard."

"This toy is even softer than Mommy..."

Maya's Visit to the Hairdresser

No, silly! She didn't get a haircut. We just went to support Daddy, and to show off the baby to Heather Hair, our trusty hairdresser. Here are some photos of Maya getting cozy in the "hair chair." I think she knows she's going to be spending a lot of time here in the future....
"Geez, Daddy! Get a haircut already!"

"I feel like a big girl in this cool chair!"

"Give me the Jennifer Aniston Haircut, Heather Hair!"

Time for bed!

It's time to get Maya into her resting clothes. Take a peek at Maya's naked time!
video

Catch Up Time.

Our wekend in a nutshell...

Lunch at Crazy Bowls and Wraps. Maya drank milk.

Maya, Kevin, and Nana went to Laumier Scultpure Park, while I stayed home and rested. Maya rested on the walk.

Maya looks very tan under the flourescent lights at Target (her favorite store).

Dinner at Sweet Tomatoes is always the best.

Nana is here!

Kevin's mom is here visiting this week! Maya loves her Nana! We've been doing all the regular activities - morning coffee, mall, shopping, etc. We're trying to exhaust the baby so she sleeps better at night. So far, it's working... a little...

Free Beer is Awesome.

We went to Grant's Farm yesterday. It's pretty neat. You take a trolley up a winding hill, and see all these woolly animals (dear, buffalo, ducks, zebras, etc.), and you end up at a little activity area. You can buy bottles of milk and feed the goats, see little movies, or just look at the animals. It's kind of an odd mix of animals (goats, tortoises, an elephant, mini horses and donkeys, and parrots). The whole trip is pretty quick, but at the end, there's this big courtyard where you can buy all kinds of goodies. If you're lucky, you'll notice the little nook, labeled "Busch Hospitality." There, you can get "samples" of about 8 different varieties of beer or non-alcoholic energy drinks. I put the term "sample" in quotes, because these are at least 8 ounce plastic cups. Not only that, but you can get 2! This didn't mean much for Maya and me, as we aren't beer drinkers, but Kevin got to try some kind of peach Bacardi and a some other variety of Budweiser. Wendy had an energy drink, and Maya and I guzzled milk and water (respectively). Mmmm. We had fun.

The day ended with an Indian food potluck supper at Brook, Ben, James, and Keira's house. Potlucks with them are always fun! We had a good time seeing everyone. We forgot a camera though. I need to get back on track with my photos!

"Daddy! Now we both need a haircut!"

"Feed me Maya!"

"Thanks for taking a photo of me with the mini-horse, Mom. I was too sleepy to stay awake for it, but you know how I love all things miniature."

"I'm in a very serious mood."

Happy Birthday, Aunt Nora!

Well, we're a day late, but here's a shout-out to Aunt Nora, who turned 21 yesterday! Okay, well, maybe 21 is an underestimate, but oh well... Anyway, here's Maya's facial expression, as she reacts to hearing about Nora's birthday...

Oh boy. I'm suddenly behind.

Forgive me for my lack of updates, friends! Even though having Nana in the house is helpful, it makes me forget about downloading my photos! It's partially because we've been out and about, and also because she's staying in the "photo downloading room!" I guess I'm all excuses today! Anyway, I'll catch up, I swear! Especially considering the fact that we did some fun things this weekend. Oh well. I'll get back on track!

Saturday, July 5, 2008

Last night we went to a little shindig at Michael and Tracy's house. It's kind of funny to think that we spent 4th of July at the home of someone who isn't even American. Go figure. We had a great time though. It was a potluck "Make your own Burrito Party." In our typical Finkel fashion, we brought the dessert. St. Louis was lucky yesterday - we had the most gorgeous weather. Anyway, we played at Michael and Tracy's until Maya was showing signs of boredom (i.e. crying and whining and basically asking to go home). When we got home, Maya slept for 6 hours in a row. Wow. The problem is, it started at 7, and when it was over, she was pretty much awake for the rest of the night. Ugh. Today is a sleepy day. Wendy (a.k.a Nana) is here for the week. Yay! More on that, and some photos, coming up later...

"Daddy! Quit exposing my belly to the neighbors! I'm very modest you know!"

"Thanks for holding me Beth! You are so good at this!"

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the Anesthesiology Department Teacher of the Year...

as they play Guitar Hero, and Nintendo Wii Boxing.
Nice.

When can I go under the sprinkler, Mommy?

Brooke, Nash, Brie, and Alex came over this morning. Brooke brought the infamous Elmo sprinkler. Nash loves this thing. I mean, he is just fearless, and totally into it. Alex was apprehensive when he first saw it, but he ended up having a blast. Maya sat on the sidelines, pouting with jealousy. Or maybe it was the glare from the sun. We brought the Bumbo outside so she had a place to sit. It has been a gorgeous day here in St. Lou, so we had fun. Oh, by the way - Alex will soon have a blog, so we can add him to the list of friends. We can't wait!

"Thanks for sitting this one out with me Dad."

"Mommy, this sun hat is great, but when can I get sunglasses?"

"Alex, what's so funny?"

Nash loves every second of this!

Thanks for putting me back in the shade Mom!"

"I love you too, Daddy."

Hmmmm... how did this happen?

Yesterday we visited with Christina and Ed. Maya was fussing like crazy... until Ed got a hold of her. He rocked her a few times, and this is what happened. Maybe she wants to be taller.

We're Sleepy.

Maya and I are very tired today. Maya had a very restless sleep, and she woke up on the wrong side of the swing. We had a little playgroup at Brie's house this morning. It was really nice, although Maya and I were both exhausted and a little anti-social. The neat thing was, Maya had a chance to go in Alex's Jumperoo. She's way too small for it, so you have to stack blankets underneath so she can reach the floor. It's pretty cute. We left on the early side because Maya was in desperate need of a nap. She's been crabby again today. I wonder what's going on in that little body of her's... Anyway, after her nap (only an hour! What?!!), we went to see Christina and Ed. More on that tomorrow... It's a cliffhanger!!!

"James! Don't leave me! I'm stuck in Mommy's lap!"

"Alex, I like your toys!"

"Mommy, will you buy me an iced Chai?? You know it's my fave... Just look at my sweet face..."

"This Jumperoo is amazing! I wish my feet would hit the floor..."

Maya's Naked Walk

As previously mentioned, Maya was Cranky McFinkel last night. Kevin and I decided it was time for a walk. A naked walk. We stripped Maya down to the diaper and threw her in the sling. As you can see from the "before picture," she was a grump. I'm thinking she likes being naked though. Check out the "after picture." What a sweetie. She fell asleep for good at 7:00. I couldn't keep her awake, despite my best efforts. She fell asleep on the couch. Just like her mommy...

Before

After

Unwakeable on the Couch

What's that in your mouth Maya?

Oh! It's your tongue! I thought it was one of the wooden 3-D shapes from my old classroom. You have an incredibly conical tongue Maya. Good job!

Fussy Day... and Target Fraud

Maya is fussy today. I don't know why, but she's been squealing like crazy for most of the day. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of these days. She seems annoyed and irritated, and maybe even uncomfy for some reason, and I don't know why. Maybe she's tired, or hungry, or gassy, or just plain cranky... I can't figure it out, and neither can Kevin. I wonder if it's her reflux acting up again. Hmph. Any ideas? She took 3 catnaps today, but no long naps, so maybe that's the problem. Poor thing. I hate to see her in a bad mood.

On another note, we went to Target this afternoon. Brooke had sent us this incredible $5 off a $20 purchase coupon. Kevin and I used it on Saturday, and then I printed more for today. After spending an hour looking for $25 worth of unecessary knick knacks, I got in line to pay. I had a sheet full of these $5 coupons, so I gave one to the woman in front of me, who had a cart full of (what else?) unecessary junk. She was grateful. I moved to a different line and went about my business. Unfortunately, as I handed over my coupon, the woman behind the counter pointed out a flyer/poster that was posted all over the store - the coupons were fraudulent. Yup, they don't work at all. Oddly, I used one last weekend, and so did Brooke! I guess someone cracked the bar code, and they finally figured it out. I told the cashier that I had used it last week, and she said, "Yeah, I did too!" Hmph. I guess the employees were fooled too. So no more coupons. At least we used it once, right?? Oh, and I really felt bad about giving a counterfeit coupon to the lady in front of me. I hope she didn't think I was scamming her. Kind of funny if you think about it...

Where is Maya??

We were cooking last night, and suddenly, we realized we didn't know where Maya was...

Maya's First Accident

What a bummer of a day. We started the day at the park, followed by a nice walk at the mall. From there, it was off to Brooke's for a visit with Nash, Jen and Hailey, and Brie and Alex. Brooke had this fun Elmo sprinkler for Nash and Alex. Maya isn't interested in cold water yet. She prefers warm bubbly baths. What a princess. Anyway, we decided to leave at one-ish, and Maya fell asleep on our way out the door. Perfect. No car-meltdowns in the forseeable future. Then - the unthinkable. I go ahead and back right into a parked car that was right across the street from Brooke's driveway. You know how they say, "You should see the other guy!"?? Well, you should, because her damage is minimal, but my back bumper is destroyed. Truly. Here's the thing - we are all okay, Maya didn't even wake up, and it's only money. I feel really stupid though. I mean, I swear I was looking, but clearly not hard enough. Grrrr. That's life I guess, but sheesh, why does life let people park their cars right opposite someone else's driveway?!

"Hey Mom, I like this swing better than the one at home! I always like other babies' stuff more than mine!"

What are you looking at Alex? And what's up with your arm Brie?!

Um, Jen? I don't think Hailey is big enough for you to actually hide behind her...

Nash! I see London, I see France!

"Hey Mom, don't forget that there's a car parked in the street by Brooke's driveway! I foresee you getting into an accident!" Maya, are you a fortune teller?

Background
